JOURNALIST
Here is a collection of articles I wrote for various publications.
Cannabis industry in limbo as California ends pot prohibition
Oakland North, November 21, 2016
By passing Proposition 64 and legalizing recreational marijuana in the state, California voter sparked a long process to mainstream and regulate the industry. I dove deep to find out what changes will be coming and if those working in the industry are ready for them.
Labor Day picnic celebrates working person, attendees talk politics
Oakland North, September 6, 2016
Fellow UC Berkeley grad students and I covered a Labor Day picnic hosted by Alameda County labor unions. I wrote the story, but my classmates contributed reporting, photos and an audio piece to go with the story.
Feelin' the heat: Local farmers impacted by warm weather
The New Paltz Oracle, February 11, 2014
An unusually warm winter wasn't getting any colder and the local farmers were worried of what a late snow could do to their fields. I enjoy writing stories that teach me things I would never take the time to learn otherwise.
The rise in the demand for CISOs
Security Current, July 30, 2015
While working at the information security trade journal, Security Current, I wrote about the industry need for chief information security officers. I hadn't been covering this topic for long but I took a look at the industry just at a time when major hacks were everywhere.
U.S. has modest job gains in September, East Bay economy is still growing
Oakland North, October 13, 2016
While covering economic trends and developments in labor, I reported on the national jobs report. For the publication, Oakland North, I localized the story to focus on the Bay Area and where it's economy stood relative to the nation's.
A restaurant is still a business: The complexity of keeping your doors open in New Paltz
The New Paltz Oracle, March 3, 2016
In a village that spans only a few blocks, there more than 50 bars and eateries. I spoke to people working in New Paltz's restaurant industry to find out how they stay in business with so much competition.
Welcoming mothers on campus
The New Paltz Oracle, May 7, 2015
After efforts from both faculty and students, our school opened a room for mothers to privately breast feed or pump milk for their babies. This story was challenging but fun and someone got to do it so I'm glad it was me.
Proposal looks to charge heroin dealers with homicide
The New Paltz Oracle, March 3, 2016
This story came when the state looked to charging heroin dealers with homicide if the heroin they sold caused an overdose death. There had been many overdose deaths in the area not long before, making the issue very local.
Construction boom brings industry jobs back to the Bay Area
Oakland North, September 14, 2016
From records released by the county economic development office, I found that the area's construction jobs had recovered from the 2008 recession. This story also includes quotes from people in the industry about how the boom is affecting work.
A kale tale in New Paltz
The New Paltz Oracle, October 9, 2014
Our school's food department decided to put kale into every menu item for lunch one day. Kale in salad, kale in the sandwiches, kale on pizza, kale with pirogies, like they never even had pirogies before this. So I ventured into the cafeteria to find out what was really being done to the students' taste buds.
Village of New Paltz student tenants concerned with their landlords
The Little Rebellion, March 24, 2015
This was my first investigative piece. I found records showing local off-campus student apartments were repeatedly having the same problems. The landlord had been neglecting repairs and fixing problems only after inspection.
Proposed corporate construction draws controversy
The New Paltz Oracle, October 1, 2015
You've heard it before. Big business wanted to come in and the little town wanted nothing to do with it. Covering local news is the most important journalism that can be done. I'm glad to say the Oracle is still doing it.
